India Commits $300,000 to Support the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries

In a significant gesture of international cooperation, India has pledged a contribution of $300,000 to the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS). This funding is earmarked to assist in organizing the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3), scheduled for June 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, officially presented the cheque to Ms. Rabab Fatima, UnderSecretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States. This contribution underscores India’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by landlocked developing countries, particularly in South Asia where India plays a pivotal role as a major transit country.

Additionally, India has endorsed a no-cost extension for the unused portion of its previous $250,000 grant, initially provided in 2018 for the Comprehensive High-Level Midterm Review of the Vienna Programme of Action. This extension, valid until 31 December 2024, allows OHRLLS to allocate the remaining funds towards the successful execution of LLDC3.

India’s ongoing support for LLDC3 reflects its broader commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South and contributing constructively to global development initiatives.
