Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly to pay tribute to the memory of Pope Francis

Excellencies,

 

Dear Colleagues,

 

The passing away of His Holiness Pope Francis on 21 April 2025 is a moment of profound sadness not only for the global Catholic community, but also for the whole world who was inspired by his extraordinary life.

 

2. Pope Francis was an once in a generation leader. His message of service of mankind, love and humility transcended borders and touched so many. His life, devoted to peace, justice and human dignity and his deep commitment towards all humans, especially the poor and the marginalized, is an inspiration and a testament to his enduring faith in the service of mankind.

 

3. Pope Francis’ legacy will be one of compassion. It will espouse service. It will motivate people of all faiths to live together in peace and harmony. His final Easter message encouraged us to believe in the principle of humanity in our daily actions. It reminds us that Love can triumph over hatred, light over darkness and truth over falsehood. Following his path will lead us to a more stable, peaceful and prosperous world. 

 

4. The Asia-Pacific Group joins the whole world in mourning the passing of His Holiness, who will aptly be remembered as the ‘People’s Pope’, a source of spiritual strength and a beacon of hope and affection for millions around the whole world.
