Annual Meeting of the UNAOC Group of Friends
27 September 2024
INDIA STATEMENT
by
Ambassador Yojna Patel
Deputy Permanent Representative
Thank you
Mr. High Representative,
My delegation would like to comment your efforts for convening this annual meeting of the UNAOC Group of Friends. We express our appreciation for your efforts in leading the Alliance of Civilizations. This platform has assumed greater significance in a contemporary world where divisive lines are becoming broader and more sharper than ever before.
India, as an ancient civilization, has consistently advocated for global peace by promoting inter-ethnic and inter-religious understanding through open, inclusive, and constructive dialogue. Our civilizational ethos is deeply rooted in the universal values of democracy, pluralism, and the rule of law. Sarva Dharma Sambhav, the Indian philosophy of equal respect for all religions, has always been a guiding principle in this effort.
Mr. High Representative,
Unfortunately, we are witnessing disconcerting trends in the world of today. There is a surge in instances of intolerance, discrimination and acts of violence, based on religion or belief. We strongly condemn such acts of discrimination or violence motivated by anti-semitism, Christianophobia, and Islamophobia.
At the same time, however, we are deeply concerned with the growing manifestations of intolerance, discrimination, and violence against followers of other religions. These have contributed to the emergence of contemporary forms of religio-phobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias.
It is an undeniable fact that such contemporary forms of religio-phobia are on the rise and need to be factored into our discussions and duly reflected in the UNAOC Plan of Action.
We are also alarmed by the growing attacks on religious places, including churches, gurudwaras, monasteries, mosques, temples, synagogues, and other sacred sites.
The Alliance of Civilizations must broaden its focus to document and address these emerging forms of religious hatred and violence.
Mr. High Representative,
To conclude, I would like to reiterate India’s strong commitment towards the activities of the Alliance to promote global peace understanding, tolerance and respect.
Thank you
