Address by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj
Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations
On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day
[15 August 2023]
-----
Few places on Earth can offer the variety that India does. We are a 5000 years old civilization, there, perhaps when no one was.
Knowledge from our Vedas, some of the oldest texts of the planet, transcend the barriers of race, creed and religion, extending to all parts of the world. And peace advocated from our ancient Gita has uplifted and touched souls.
However, the depth of India is not solely contained within its past. 77 years of independence have paved a path of acceleration and development within our country. In terms of our economic growth, we are one of the fastest growing economies in the world; in terms of our environmental efforts, we lead in conservation including through the Blue Revolution for bluer oceans and skies; in technology, with cost effective and influentially bold space programmes, we have launched some of the most powerful rockets and satellites, as well as in our actions of tenacity and strength on education for all.
And every day, we strive to edge towards a country devoid of poverty and hunger through the empowerment of our people.
As a consequence, India’s efforts synchronize perfectly with those of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – monumental goals which aim to unify and dignify all.
Distinguished Ambassadors; Ladies and Gentlemen,
As one of the founding members of the United Nations, India has been unwavering in its commitment to the principles of multilateralism. Since its inception, India has played a vital role in shaping the global dialogue on peace, security, and development. Our nation's enduring legacy within the UN stands as a testament to our dedication to international cooperation and shared progress.
Looking ahead, we are enthusiastic about the prospects of continued collaboration with member states to advance the UN's noble agenda. India pledges to be a reliable and constructive partner, fostering a spirit of friendship that you can consistently depend upon. With a flag that now flies high around the world, India is poised to contribute its unique perspective and resources to the collective efforts aimed at making our planet a better place for all.
With our G20 Presidency, we hope to influence decision-making in trade and finance, guiding it towards more equitable progress. Additionally, the agenda also includes addressing matters related to human development.
I will also add that India's journey within the United Nations has been characterized by a steadfast commitment to global harmony and prosperity. We embrace the opportunities before us and eagerly anticipate working hand in hand with our fellow member states to carry forward the UN's vital mission. In a swiftly evolving global scenario, India stands ready to be a beacon of cooperation, a source of strength, and a true friend on the path towards a more peaceful and prosperous world.
Ladies and Gentlemen, my grateful thanks to all of you in honouring us today. I also wish to express my profound gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support, seamless collaboration and the invaluable gift of your friendship. As has been famously said: Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. Let’s keep nurturing these connections of friendship and collaboration that will propel us towards enduring success.
If you will indulge me and in tribute to my country, I will end with a quote from Swami Vivekananda. “If there is any land on this earth that can lay claim to be - the land where humanity has attained its highest towards greatness, towards generosity, towards purity, towards calmness, above all, the land of introspection and of spirituality – it is India”.
Thank you!
