UN Security Council Briefing on UNAMA/Afghanistan
(September 26, 2023; 1000 hrs)
Statement by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj
Permanent Representative of India to the UN
-----
Mr. President,
I express my gratitude for convening this meeting, and extend my thanks to SRSG Rosa Otunbayeva, as well as the civil society briefer, for their insightful remarks regarding the Afghanistan situation.
As Afghanistan’s contiguous neighbour and a friend to its people, India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability to the country.
In the spirit of time efficiency, allow me to highlight three key observations regarding the situation in the country, drawing upon our historical and civilizational connections with the Afghan people.
One, our collective approach has been articulated in Security Council’s resolution 2593. In this regard, our common and immediate priorities include providing humanitarian assistance for the Afghan people; formation of inclusive and representative government structure; combating terrorism and drug trafficking; and preserving the rights of women, children, and minorities.
Two, given the distressing humanitarian situation in the country, we need to prioritize humanitarian assistance to the people. India has delivered assistance to Afghanistan in the form of food grains, medicines, vaccines, disaster relief aid, winter clothing, and stationery materials for schools. We have also continued educational scholarships to the Afghan students. India has also partnered with UNODC in its humanitarian efforts. Our humanitarian assistance will continue for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan.
Three, we have already partnered with several UN agencies on ground and continue to do so for the welfare of the people of Afghanistan. We note that, as requested by the UN Security Council resolution 2679, the Secretary General would be providing his integrated and independent assessment and forward-looking recommendations to address the challenges facing Afghanistan. We look forward to the report.
In conclusion, Mr. President, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to keeping Afghanistan close to our hearts. India will persistently raise its voice in support of the Afghan people. The pursuit of peace and stability in Afghanistan is an urgent and shared imperative that demands our collective dedication.
Thank you!
