India Statement by Mr. R. Madhu Sudan, Counsellor

Thank you, Mr. President.

2.    Let me also thank President of ICAO for the briefing. We have noted the points made in the briefing.

3.      The incident involving the Ryan Air Flight No. FR4978 in the Belarusian airspace in May 2021 is being dealt at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the apex international technical organization in the field of civil aviation.

4.    India has always maintained that such incidents should be subject to independent investigation conducted by ICAO. In this regard, we have noted the conclusions of investigations into the incident. The conclusions of any investigation should be established based on facts and devoid of any political considerations.

4.    India calls for consistency in action over violation of Chicago Convention by Member States. Actions that lead to isolation or exclusion will not only impinge cooperation in the civilian aviation sector, but cause delay in determination of circumstances that put the safety and security of the passengers in jeopardy. We need to encourage concerned member states to extend cooperation to investigations. We also believe sanctions or measures that harm civilian populations should be avoided.

I thank you.
