UNSC meeting on Ukraine called by Russia on Topic of
“Supplies of Lethal Weapons by Western Countries to Ukraine which pose a serious threat to international peace and security”
(8 September 2022; 1500 hrs)
Remarks by Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj
Permanent Representative of India to the UN
-----
Mr. President,
At the outset, our thanks to USG Nakamitsu for her detailed briefing. We also thank the civil society briefer for her remarks.
2. We believe that internationally agreed principles and regimes should be respected and upheld by all countries. This Council would recall that since the commencement of the conflict in Ukraine, India has been consistently calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and an end to violence. We have emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way forward.
3. It is regrettable that the situation in Ukraine has not shown any significant improvement despite regular Council discussions, today’s meeting being the third in as many days in this week alone.
4. We very much hope that the international community will continue to respond positively to the call for humanitarian assistance. India has recently dispatched its twelfth consignment of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This humanitarian assistance is in keeping with the human centric approach of the Government of India, a central tenet of our national beliefs and values, which perceives the whole world as one family.
5. India’s approach will be to promote dialogue and diplomacy with an overarching aim to end the conflict and work with other partners to mitigate economic challenges emerging from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
6. It is in our collective interest to work constructively, both inside the United Nations and outside, towards seeking an early resolution to this conflict. We continue to reiterate that the global order is anchored on international law, UN Charter and respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
I thank you Mr. President.
