India’s EOV on the adoption of UNAMI’s Resolution

India welcomes the unanimous adoption of the resolution to extend the mandate of UNAMI. Our vote in favour of the resolution reflects our historical and long-standing friendship between India and Iraq.

2. Iraq and its people have been ravaged by the scourge of terrorism. As Iraq continues its efforts towards economic recovery, reconciliation and reconstruction, it needs the support of UN and the international community. In this regard, India appreciates UNAMI’s work and its close cooperation with Government of Iraq in providing the necessary assistance sought by them to tackle the multiple challenges faced by Iraq.

3. However, it is equally important to ensure that the focus of UNAMI is not distracted by additional responsibilities, which either duplicate or can otherwise be efficiently executed by the concerned UN agencies in Iraq. Further we have consistently maintained that issues of climate change should be addressed holistically through the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in accordance with its provisions and principles, especially that of climate finance and adaptation, and the Paris Agreement and, that no artificial link should be drawn between climate change and security related issues without any firm scientific basis.

I thank you.
