Statement by Ambassador Yojna Patel, Deputy Permanent Representative
5 February 2026

Thank you, Mr. President.

My delegation would like to align itself with the statement made by Uruguay on behalf of G77 and China, and Brazil. We would like to underline that we are very concerned with the proposed and significant reduction in the budgetary allocations for UNOSSC, which we are convinced would result in reduced manpower and will adversely impact its capacity to implement projects in a professional and efficient way, especially those under the Trust Funds and which directly support its activities in developing countries.

2. We are also concerned with the growing shift towards a predominantly policy-oriented approach and the forging of global alliances, especially under the present constrained budgetary allocations. My delegation believes that a proper balance must be maintained between policy and programming functions with clear priority accorded to programming, which lies at the core of UNOSSC's mandate.

3. We support South-South cooperation and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Mr. President, my delegation therefore strongly urges for a higher allocation of funds to UNOSSC to enable it to effectively fulfill its mandate in advancing South-South cooperation and scalable development solutions that contribute meaningfully to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
