Engagement with UN80 Initiative at First Regular Session of the
Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS

Thank you Mr. President convening this important meeting today.

Thank you Madam DSG for sharing your perspective on UN80 Initiative.

Mr. President, my delegation would like to make following general observations:

My delegation underscores that the development pillar must remain the top priority under the UN80 Initiative, with a continued focus on strengthening support to countries of the Global South. In this regard, we would appreciate further clarity on the proposed regional initiatives, including the system-wide working group on the Regional Reset and the Regional Integrated Platforms, particularly on how these arrangements will enhance support to Member States at the regional and country levels.

The UN80 initiative should not be limited to identifying cost efficiencies alone. It is an opportunity to reflect on the United Nations’ achievements and challenges, reform its structures, restore its credibility and prepare the Organization to deliver more effectively in the decades ahead. While we recognize ongoing efforts to improve coordination, it has been our experience that many UN entities, including UNDP, have been effectively supporting host governments in advancing national development priorities for decades. Any regional initiatives, including regional integrated platforms, should therefore complement rather than undermine existing reporting mechanisms and the capacity of UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes to assist Member States.

Mr. President,

We have noted the proposals outlined in the Secretary-General’s report, including the working group on the Regional Reset, UN country team reconfiguration and other restructuring initiatives. While we support a leaner and more transparent UN with a lighter headquarters footprint and stronger field presence, it is essential that the expertise and institutional knowledge of specialized agencies particularly those serving countries of the Global South, including LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS are strengthened. We look forward to our commitment to engage constructively in this process.
