Thank you Mr. President.

Mr President,

On behalf of my delegation, I thank Mr. Aldino Campos, Chair of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), for his comprehensive presentation on the progress of work during the 64th, 65th, and 66th sessions. We also commend the Commission and the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) for their continued dedication in carrying out the important mandate entrusted to them under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

India notes with appreciation the progress made by the Commission during the reporting period, including the consideration of several submissions, the adoption of recommendations, the establishment of new sub-commissions, and continued efforts to improve the efficiency and consistency of its work. We also welcome the development of technical bulletins and other measures aimed at enhancing the scientific and technical work of the Commission.

Mr. President,

The Commission plays a critical role in assisting coastal States in the implementation of Article 76 of the Convention. Its recommendations provide an important basis for coastal States in establishing the outer limits of their continental shelves in accordance with international law.

India notes, however, that despite the significant efforts undertaken by the Commission, a substantial number of submissions continue to await consideration and that the waiting period before the commencement of such consideration remains a concern. In this regard, India supports continued efforts aimed at improving the efficiency of the Commission while fully preserving the scientific integrity, independence, and quality of its work.

India also underscores the importance of ensuring that the Commission is provided with adequate financial, technical, and administrative resources necessary for the effective discharge of its mandate. In this context, we note the concerns expressed regarding the working space, technical facilities, and support services available to the Commission, and encourage continued efforts to address these requirements.

Mr. President,

My delegation emphasizes the importance of maintaining equitable geographical representation within the Commission and encourages efforts to address existing vacancies in accordance with the provisions of the Convention and established practice.

India further recognizes the valuable contribution made by members of the Commission and supports ongoing discussions aimed at ensuring appropriate and sustainable arrangements regarding their conditions of service, thereby enabling all members to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

Mr. President,

India reaffirms its commitment to the UNCLOS and to the work of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. We remain committed to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to advance the effective implementation of the Convention and to promote the peaceful and equitable use of the oceans and their resources.
