Madam President,

       Today’s voting takes place in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The world has been witnessing this conflict for more than 11 months now. This has resulted in the death of thousands, including women and children. The consequent humanitarian crisis is large in scale.

2.    Our position on this conflict has been clear and consistent. We have articulated this several times. We unequivocally condemn the terror attacks on Israel on 7th October 2023; we condemn the loss of civilian lives in the conflict; we call for an immediate ceasefire and immediate and unconditional release of all hostages; and we stand for unrestricted and sustained humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip.

3.    India’s abiding commitment to achieving a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue is also known. Madam President, I use the floor to reiterate that only a Two-State solution, achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides will lead to enduring peace.

4.    Madam President, India has abstained from today’s vote.

5.    We have been strong advocates of dialogue and diplomacy. We believe that there is no other way to resolve conflicts. There are no winners in conflicts. The cost of conflict is human lives and destruction.

6.    India attaches utmost respect to the UN Charter and the Principal organs of the United Nations. Our joint efforts should be directed towards bringing the two sides closer, not drive them further apart. We should strive towards building bridges, not furthering the divides. 

7.    I urge the august assembly to make a genuine effort to strive for peace.

8.    In conclusion, I emphasize our steadfast commitment to resolution of the conflict and restoration of peace, by bringing human suffering to an end. We will continue to be guided by this spirit. To this end, we stand ready to continue our engagements towards achieving sustained peace.
