Ambassador's Message

On behalf of my colleagues at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York, I would like to welcome you to our website. We have made the new website user-friendly and interactive, and encourage you to use the Feedback Mechanism to share your views and any suggestions.

The website contains a wealth of detail regarding India's engagement with the multilateral system, including documents and records from almost a century ago. We have provided access to statements in the General Assembly, Security Council, ECOSOC and important Committees made by the delegation of India over the past ten years.

The website has a vibrant social media page, including informative posts on Twitter and Facebook. The website also developing a rich repository of video clips of important events and statements. Update on important events and statements made by the Indian delegation at the United Nations are uploaded on the social media in real time for widest possible dissemination. The E-book section hosts digitized publications by the Mission from time to time.

India has been a founding member of the United Nations since signing the UN Charter in San Francisco in 1945. We take pride in our contribution to the process of decolonization, which enabled the vast majority of developing countries under colonial rule to become independent and join as equal members of the United Nations.

Our commitment to help maintain international peace and security has been demonstrated by more than 180,000 troops from the Indian armed forces, who have participated in 48 UN peacekeeping missions so far with distinction and valour. We have placed emphasis on the UN Charter's provisions to bring about the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means. India has been advocating 'Zero tolerance' approach to terrorism in all its forms. With the objective of providing a comprehensible legal framework to counter terrorism India took the initiative to pilot a draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) in 1996 and continues to work for its early adoption.

India is a major participant in the formulation and implementation of the United Nations sustainable development agenda. Building on our experience in implementing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), India was a leading voice in the negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. India also played a lead role in arriving at the Addis Ababa Action Agenda for financing development and the international community's collective success in adopting the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

We believe India has all the necessary credentials to be included as a permanent member of the reformed United Nations Security Council and is at the forefront of efforts on UN reform process underway.
