Sustainable Development Goals

2 April 2024

Trusteeship Council Chamber, UNHQ

Today, we stand on the edge of tomorrow.

Mr. Narayana Murthy, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, Mr. Madhu Pandit Dasa, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning and namaste to everyone here. If I may say so, we're not just sharing a room, we're sharing a mission. A mission to carve out a future that mirrors our highest hopes, our deepest aspirations.

The United Nations Secretary-General, His Excellency Antonio Guterres, said it best: “This is about more than graphs and charts. It's about the laughter in schools, the first breaths of newborns, the smiles of mothers who can provide, and the pride of families living with dignity.”

India is at the heart of this vision. We're taking bold steps, especially in eradicating poverty. Our actions today are painting the canvas of tomorrow. It's a journey of hope, a journey of change.

We've already made history. Over 415 million people in India have stepped out of poverty.

But we're not stopping there. Our mantra, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam - One Earth, One Family, One Future,” guides us.

At the G20 Summit, we showcased millets - our heritage crop - to the world. The Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman initiative is a giant leap towards zero hunger. It's nurturing over 100 million children incorporating millets, marking a stride forward in the global fight against hunger.

Our Prime Minister says, “India is driven by its ancient wisdom and its commitment to global well-being.”

Standing as a testament to this commitment is the Akshayapatra initiative. Recognized by Harvard Business School for its innovative approach to solving hunger and achieving education goals, Akshayapatra aims to feed 3 million children by 2025.

Their efforts shine as a model of hope and a template for impactful action.  This goes beyond feeding the hungry. It's about educating the young and empowering women.

The Prime Minister puts it profoundly, उत्साहो बलवानार्य नास्त्युत्साहात्परं बलम्। सोत्साहस्य  लोकेषु  किंचिदपि दुर्लभम् (Enthusiasm is our most powerful force, yet when it is steered by our reflection & reason, it becomes even mightier.  For one who masters this, no challenge is too great).

Akshayapatra embodies this spirit.  To all of you here today, your presence speaks volumes. You are part of this transformative journey.

Congratulations to Akshayapatra, and a warm welcome to our panel and guests. Let's continue to light the way forward, building a future filled with resilience, compassion, and prosperity.

Together, we are more than just participants in a conference. We are builders of a future that shines bright for everyone. Thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey towards a world that is inclusive and full of hope.
