General Assembly Security Council

UNSC Briefing on DPRK Missile Launch

(11.05.2022; 1500 hours EDT/0030 hours IST on 12.05.2022)

Madam President,

I thank you for convening this meeting today. I also thank ASG Khaled Kiari for his briefing on the latest developments in DPRK.

India has noted the reports of a launch of yet another missile by the DPRK on 7 May. This comes on the heels of the launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile by the DPRK in March and other successive launches.

These launches constitute a violation of the resolutions of the Security Council relating to the DPRK. They affect peace and security of the region and beyond.

We call for full implementation of the UNSC resolutions related to the DPRK.

India also believes that there is a pressing need to address the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies related to DPRK in our region. These linkages have an adverse impact on peace and security in the region, including on India.

Let me reiterate our consistent position here that India supports dialogue as the means to resolve the issues in the Korean Peninsula. We also reiterate our continued support to denuclearization towards peace and security in the Korean Peninsula.

This Council has met several times since the beginning of the year to discuss the series of missile launches by the DPRK. In this context, we have earlier urged a report of the Panel of Experts on these launches in the context of the UNSC resolutions. We await such report as early as possible.

I thank you.
