General Assembly General Assembly

Statement by  Ambassador  Asoke K. Mukerji, Permanent Representative  on the occasion of the release of Secretary General's 'Synthesis Report on Post-2015 Development Agenda' at the UN General Assembly on December 4, 2014

Mr. President,

My delegation would like to welcome the Synthesis Report just presented by the distinguished Secretary General as an input to the intergovernmental negotiation process on Post-2015 Development Agenda.

The Road to Dignity by 2030, which is the title of the report, we believe will have as its overarching objective the eradication of poverty.  Towards this end, my country would like to reaffirm its commitment to engage actively in constructive negotiations from January 2015 on agreeing on, and adopting, the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

We welcome the fact that the Synthesis Report has fully endorsed the outcome of the Open Working Group Report on Sustainable Development Goals, which is a result of intensive negotiations between all the member States of the United Nations.  The six elements recommended by the Synthesis Report to help inform our final negotiations will be useful as a reference tool.

Mr. President,

We would like to reiterate our long articulated view, based on our experience of implementing the MDGs that this enterprise will succeed only if resources, both financial as well as technological, are made available to implement this ambitious Agenda.

We also emphasize that the Agenda's implementation will depend as much on strong political will, as the responsiveness and effectiveness of the United Nations to provide a framework to support it.  Therefore, while we frame our aspirations for the next 15 years, we must also act swiftly to carry out the necessary reforms of the UN to fulfill the vision that we set out for ourselves in 2005.

I thank you.
