General Assembly General Assembly

Statement by Mr. Abhishek Singh, First Secretary,  exercising India's Right of Reply during  the General Debate of the Fourth  Committee: Special Political and Decolonization Committee at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on October 14, 2015

First Right of Reply

Mr. Chairman, I am taking the floor to exercise our Right of Reply as the distinguished representative from Pakistan has regrettably made a reference to Jammu & Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.

We reject in entirety the untenable comments from the distinguished representative of Pakistan, the references to Jammu & Kashmir in them, being completely irrelevant to the work of this Committee.

Further, the Indian Constitution guarantees the fundamental rights to all its citizens.  The people of Jammu & Kashmir have chosen their destiny peacefully in accordance with the universally accepted democratic principles and practices and they continue to do so. Democracy in Jammu and Kashmir has enabled the people of the state to freely express their wishes and elect their representatives. These elections have been held under the scrutiny of international media and opinion, which has not faulted the electoral process.

We would like to once again reiterate that Jammu & Kashmir is and will remain an integral part of India.  Also, this does not concern with the work of this Committee.  We reject the completely untenable remarks of the distinguished representative of Pakistan in their entirety.

I  thank you Mr. Chairman.

Second Right of Reply

Mr. Chairman,

Regrettably, the Pakistani representative has once again taken the floor.  While we reject all the untenable and unsolicited remarks from the delegate of Pakistan, we would like to advise the distinguished delegate of Pakistan to refrain from using the 'Right of Reply' and instead use the 'Right of Introspection' to think about the direction in which their country is moving. Needless to say, that does not require the time of this august house and its distinguished members.

I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
