INDIA STATEMENT

I thank the Secretary-General for his gracious presence at the organisation meeting of the Committee.

Let me congratulate you, Mr. Chairman and the Vice-Chairs of the Bureau for your re-election for the 2021 term. I wish you success in your respective roles and assure you of India’s support in implementing the Program of Work, which has just been adopted by the Committee.

I wish to recall that the Bureau had a successful visit to India last year during which there was productive discussion on many issues relating to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

India has always called for a just and comprehensive solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict to achieve the two-State solution.  In addition to our political support, India has also been consistently supporting Palestinian authorities’ efforts through projects and capacity and institution building. We have also enhanced our annual contribution to UNRWA to US$ 5 million in response to the financial crisis faced by Agency.

As a member of this Committee and as a member of the Security Council in 2021–2022, India will play a constructive role towards a peaceful, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We will be joining UNRWA’s Advisory Committee this year and will continue our positive contribution to strengthen the Agency’s humanitarian efforts.

Thank you.
